| The season unexpectedly started with the resignation of
secretary Hugh Fitzsimmons and Frank Dalton temporarily filled the
vacancy for the remainder of the year. Despite this typical Fruithill
start to the year Joe Loughran had a good year as Captain. At the 1999
AGM the past year was comprehensively reviewed and changes were
suggested by the members and committee. |
| Adjustments to the Society's handicap system were put
into effect. Members of the Low section will now get 1 shot back
following 3 consecutive scores without winning an overall or section
prize. Members of the Mid and High sections will continue to get 1 shot
back following 3 consecutive scores under 30 points. Other adjustments
are not affected. The society was asked by some members to rejoin the
West Belfast Society competition and this was agreed and a team played
this year. The treasurer reported that we were still reasonably solvent
but some members felt that the cost of an outing is becoming too much
and perhaps the number should be cut back. The eventual response by the
Treasurer resulted in a vast improvement of the finances. |
| Paul Mulgrew became the Golfer of the Year when he won
at Down Royal finishing ahead of James Duggan who had led the race to
the title for the past few months. Jamesie was also pipped for the
M'Callin which he had looked favourite to take when Joe Loughran ended
one point in front over the season. Obviously playing twice in two days
took its toll on Jamesie. Paul Mulgrew was joint second in the closest
ever finish to the M'Callin. |
| The society visited two courses for the first time when
they played Blackwood and Banbridge. The visit to Blackwood resulted in
the society being asked to send a team to a contest being run by the
Blackwood course. The team consisted of Paul M'Quillan, Jim M'Cormick
and James Duggan and they won the contest with the result that Blackwood
are treating them to a golfing trip to Mount Juliet. |
