Joe Murray who has an unfair advantage over the other members in the society in that all his tee shots go straight down the middle of the fairway had an eventful year as captain. The committee suffered from the resignation of Arty M'Glone in the middle of the year and this was followed at the AGM by the resignation of the secretary Hugh Fitzsimmons. However Joe shrugged off these problems and had time to win the Hannigan Trophy. A sad but more acceptable aspect of the society was the presentation of a new trophy by Mrs Sheila Flanagan in memory of her husband the late Dennis Flanagan.
There was more trouble when the society returned to Greenore after a long absence and Seamus M'Granaghan won the overall prize. Seamus returned a score of 37 and his nearest rival was 5 points away so he was in a class of his own on the day. As usual at this venue hospitality was overwhelming and the return bus run was chaotic. So much so that the Treasurer lost his books either from a prank that went too far or for other reasons. The results were still to be evident when the AGM came round at the end of the year.
Hugh Fitzsimmons took both the M'Callin and Golfer of the Year titles and also won at Silverwood and Bright. In winning at Bright Hugh returned a score of 30 points which is probably the lowest score ever to win an overall prize. Arthur Lavery won the Captains Cup at Dungannon and Bill M'Coy enjoyed a rare win at the Weekend Outing at Portnoo. Top score of the year was 43 by Sean M'Caffrey in the last outing of the year at Mourne.
Despite escalating costs the society always had a relatively high attendance at outings. In fact this was sometimes a problem in booking a Sunday outing with some courses. This year the numbers at outings began a downward trend from an average of above forty to figures in the thirties. Balmoral was the venue for the Dinner dance and 120 members and guests attended. Although this was well down on the great numbers that attended in the early days of the society the function was still very popular with the members.
