Peter Tubritt had the honour of being the first "foreigner" to become captain of Fruithill. His Waterford accent has always set him apart and he used it to great effect in this year. The usual May weekend was spent in Donegal with accommodation at the Lake of the Shadows Hotel in Buncrana. Golf was provided on the Ballyliffin links and at the Northwest course at Fahan. Dennis Flanagan withstood all attempts to nobble him on Saturday night to win the Weekend Trophy. These venues were to the liking of the members as they were used again over the next year with Ballyliffin in particular used a number of times.
One of the great ongoing sagas of the society had been the attempt to have a board erected in Falls Bowling and Social Club premises showing the past Presidents and Captains of the society. Many times it appeared that the board was about to be fitted but somehow it never happened. However this was the year in which it did happen and it was unveiled in October. Since members of the Fruithill Society must also be members of Falls it is appropriate that it is sited in the premises. The affinity with Falls was further endorsed when Falls sponsored a society outing at Spa Golf Course. This was not the first such sponsorship nor the last.
Gerry Cullen rounded off two great years by winning the M'Callin Cup and becoming Golfer of the Year after winning at Mourne. He also partnered Michael Cunningham to win the Hannigan Trophy. Surprisingly Gerry only made two more appearances in the following season having started in 1989 with a handicap of 16 and being cut to eight. Top scores of the year were 42 points by Michael Cunningham at Killymoon and the same total by Jack M'Gowan on Presidents Day at Dungannon. Hugh M'Ildowney was the surprised winner of Captains Day after a countback which eliminated Michael Cunningham and Brian Canning all on the low score of 32 at Lurgan.
Expenses on Captains Day continued to rise as £275 was allocated for Captains Prizes. The Ballymac Hotel hosted the Dinner Dance.
