| Ben M'Callum was captain in a very busy year. At the 1981 AGM it was stated that the society was now large enough (with 85 members) and that membership would have to be kept from increasing. To
help achieve this the membership fee was increased to £5 for the year. Des Peden took office as President and continued for a number of years. Changes to the Golfer of the Year competition were
also agreed in that points were no longer to be awarded for success in the matchplay competitions. |
| The beginning of the year was troublesome because the committee found it necessary to suspend a member for marking his own card and recording incorrect scores at the Dunmurry outing. This
unpleasantness was followed up later at Captain's Day in Balmoral when an altercation at the first tee between Balmoral members and Danny M'Ilroy resulted in the temporary suspension from Balmoral
for Danny. Fruithill members who witnessed the incident were disgusted at the attitude of the Balmoral members involved and still believe that the wrong person was punished. |
| However Ben had a better time at the golf itself by winning the Member's Cup and also taking first prize at the weekend outing held at Bundoran in September. Other golfing highlights were the
entry of two teams in the N.I. Societies Cup at Moyola. There is no record of their scores but the A team is thought to have been just beaten out of first place. The Golfer of the Year was Alec
M'Atackney. The Peter M'Kiernan cup was donated by Sean M#Kiernan and the first winner was Tom Muldoon at Lurgan. Highest score of the year was thirty-nine points on Presidents Day at Dungannon by
Carlo Fusco. At Tandragee in October Pat Smyth recorded a Hole in One at the seventeenth to become the second player to record an ace in Fruithill competitions. |
| The Annual Dinner Dance took place in the new premises of Falls Bowling and Social Club for the first time and was attended by 148 members and guests. |
