| The popularity of the society was reflected in the increase in members to fifty-eight from a January total of thirty-four. First attempts at organizing a weekend away were unsuccessful. A booking
for the Lake Virginia Hotel was cancelled despite the fact that 21 members had paid a deposit. Later a proposal to have a weekend in October was abandoned. Tommy Hannigan sponsored and organized the
Hannigan knockout competition and qualification was to be the top 32 scores from the first outing. In the first draw Billy Shannon Jnr was drawn against Billy Shannon Snr. Even in this first event
there were problems with match arrangements and players were removed from the competition for various infringements in arranging matches. This first Hannigan competition was won by Carlo Fusco with
the final being played at Malone apparently in poor weather conditions. Carlo also had the lowest handicap in the society with 3 and was closely followed by Paul M'Veigh and E. Jordan with 5. A
future captain and president Des Peden was also a low handicapper on 6. |
| The first bus outing to Rossmore was organized. The outing fees were 86p for the bus and £2.40 for golf and meal. Only 43 turned up for the outing and a loss of £42 was incurred. |
| The committee was very active as the following events show: At a committee meeting B M'Laughlin proposed that "no more intoxicating liquor should be consumed at meetings and that bad language
should be banned". The proposal was defeated!! Secretary E Hynes resigned and F Murray took over his duties. B M'Laughlin resigned. The first constitution was drawn up and for the first time a member
was suspended from competition.Golfer of the Year was to be on best 3 cards of the year. An offer of sponsorship by Tuborg to the extent of £75 caused some bother as it was thought to be too
much and would belittle other sponsors. |
| The Dinner in Conway House Hotel was a big attraction at £3 per person as one hundred and thirty-four people turned up. |
